A successful piercing is about more than the day it is performed.
Healing is a gradual process that continues long after your appointment, and every body heals at its own pace. Factors such as lifestyle, general health, sleep, stress levels, jewellery quality and aftercare all contribute to how well a piercing settles.
At Isha Body Jewellery, we are here to support you throughout your healing journey, from your initial piercing appointment through to downsizing, jewellery upgrades and long-term wear.
It is perfectly normal for a new piercing to experience some tenderness, swelling, redness, warmth and minor bleeding during the early stages of healing.
As healing progresses, you may notice small amounts of clear, white or pale yellow discharge. This is a normal part of the healing process and should not be mistaken for infection.
Healing times vary considerably depending on the piercing and individual factors. Some piercings may feel comfortable long before they are fully healed, whilst others can take many months to settle completely.
Patience is one of the most important parts of successful healing.
New piercings should be cleaned using sterile saline solution such as NeilMed Piercing Aftercare.
We recommend gently cleansing the area twice daily whilst avoiding excessive cleaning, harsh products or unnecessary handling.
Try to avoid touching your piercing unless necessary, and always wash your hands thoroughly beforehand.
During healing, it is important to avoid unnecessary trauma from:
The less disturbance a healing piercing experiences, the better the outcome is likely to be.
Many common products marketed as “cleaning solutions” can actually delay healing and irritate tissue.
Avoid using:
These products can dry, irritate or damage delicate healing tissue.
Similarly, jewellery should not be removed or changed during healing unless advised by your piercer.
One of the most important stages of the healing process is downsizing.
Initial jewellery is intentionally fitted with additional length to accommodate swelling during the early healing period. Once swelling has reduced, this longer jewellery can become vulnerable to movement, snagging and irritation.
Most oral piercings require downsizing within approximately 2–3 weeks.
Most skin piercings require downsizing within approximately 4–6 weeks.
Your piercing appointment includes the downsizing service itself, however replacement jewellery is charged separately.
If you are unsure whether your piercing is ready for downsizing, please contact the studio and we will be happy to advise.
Your body heals best when it is well supported.
Good sleep, adequate hydration, balanced nutrition and managing stress can all contribute positively to healing.
Factors such as illness, smoking, medication changes and prolonged stress may affect healing times.
Remember that healing is a partnership between your body’s natural processes and appropriate aftercare.
Healing questions are completely normal.
If you are concerned about swelling, irritation, healing progress, jewellery sizing or aftercare, please contact us before attempting to remove or change jewellery yourself.
