Downsizing replaces your initial jewellery with a shorter, more fitted piece once swelling has reduced. This important step helps minimise irritation, improve comfort and support healthier healing.

Initial piercing jewellery is intentionally fitted slightly longer to allow room for swelling during the early healing stages. Once this swelling begins to reduce, jewellery that is too long can increase movement, catching, irritation and healing complications.
Downsizing replaces your initial jewellery with a shorter, more fitted piece once your piercing has settled enough to do so safely. At ISHA Body Jewellery, downsizing forms an important part of our professional aftercare process and is strongly recommended for many piercings — particularly cartilage piercings.
For many piercings, downsizing is typically recommended around 4–8 weeks after your procedure, although this can vary depending on the piercing placement, jewellery style, healing progress and your individual anatomy. Your piercer will advise you on the most appropriate timeframe during your appointment.
Jewellery that remains too long for too long can catch more easily, increase irritation, prolong swelling and create unnecessary movement during healing. In some cases, this may contribute to irritation bumps or affect the final angle and comfort of the piercing.
Properly fitted jewellery is generally more comfortable, more secure and easier to heal, whilst also creating a cleaner and more refined appearance once swelling has settled.
Downsizing is particularly important for many cartilage piercings including helix, flat, conch, tragus and forward helix piercings, as well as some nostril, lip and navel piercings. Your piercer will always advise whether downsizing is recommended for your specific piercing and anatomy.
During your appointment, your piercer will assess your healing progress, check swelling and placement, and fit shorter jewellery where appropriate. We will also answer any questions you may have about healing, aftercare or jewellery options moving forward.
Downsizing appointments are usually quick and straightforward, but they can make a significant difference to the comfort and long-term healing of your piercing.
We strongly recommend avoiding changing or shortening jewellery yourself during the healing process. Changing jewellery too early or incorrectly can irritate the piercing, introduce bacteria and delay healing unnecessarily.
Professional jewellery changes help minimise trauma and support healthier healing outcomes.
If your jewellery feels excessively long, catches frequently, or you have reached the timeframe advised by your piercer, we recommend arranging a downsizing appointment with the team.
We’ll be happy to assess your piercing and guide you through the next stage of healing comfortably and safely.
