Jewellery Fitting

How jewellery connects, secures & how to check it

This guide explains mechanics — how jewellery works, how to secure it correctly, and how to prevent accidental loss.

Compatibility

Posts and attachments connect in one of two systems:

  • Threadless (pin) — compatible across most brands

  • Threaded (screw) — must be matched to the same brand

Mixing threaded brands can damage threads and may invalidate a manufacturer’s lifetime guarantee. If unsure, ask us.

Threadless Jewellery — Insertion & Security

Threadless jewellery is supplied with the pin pre‑bent (pins are kept straight only when used in curved posts).

How to secure:

  • Practice connecting and pulling apart before inserting.

  • Keep post and pin perfectly aligned when inserting.

  • Push firmly but gently until secure.

Important: Over‑bending pins can cause breakage and may not be covered by the manufacturer's lifetime guarantee.

How to check:
  • Gently pull on the end — it should resist and feel secure.

Threaded Jewellery — Insertion & Security
  • Tighten using “righty‑tighty” (clockwise).

  • Secure firmly but never force.

How to check:

  • Periodically test with a gentle clockwise twist.

Seam Rings — Correct Handling

Seam rings must be opened and closed carefully to maintain their shape.

  • Never pull ends apart sideways — this weakens the ring and alters the diameter.

  • Use the S‑bend method: lay flat, twist one end towards you and the other away from you.

Ongoing Checks

Jewellery can loosen gradually through daily wear, sleep and lifestyle.

  • Check fittings regularly

  • Be mindful after hair brushing, clothing changes and sleeping

  • Book a professional check if anything feels different

We’re always happy to check fit, secure jewellery, replace pins, clean professionally or advise on upgrades.
