Choosing the right size for your labret jewellery ensures comfort, a secure fit, and the best possible look. A labret stud consists of a straight post with a flat disc backing on one end and an attachment on the other. When shopping online, there are three key measurements to consider:
1. Gauge (Thickness of the Post)
The gauge refers to how thick the post is.
- Common labret sizes: 18g (1mm), 16g (1.2mm) and 14g (1.6mm)
- Your piercing will already be stretched to a specific gauge—never guess this measurement
- Using a thicker post than your piercing is used to may cause irritation.
Tip: Use the jewellery you currently wear as your best guide. If unsure, choose the same gauge you were fitted with originally.
2. Length (How Long the Post Is)
The length is the distance between the flat disc backing and the point where the attachment sits.
Healed piercings: We recommend a snug fit—this avoids movement, keeps the jewellery sitting neatly, and improves comfort.
New piercings: A reputable piercer will fit a longer post to allow for swelling during healing. Once settled, usually a few months into the healing, your Piercer can downsize to a shorter, more comfortable length. This will need to be performed in the studio, using sterile equipment, to prevent infection. Once the piercing is healed, it is safe to do this yourself.

3. Disc Backing Diameter
The flat disc sits inside the piercing and supports the jewellery.
- Smaller discs are discreet and comfortable for nostrils and ears such as 3mm.
- Larger discs provide stability for thicker or softer tissue and prevent jewellery sinking into soft skin. Lips benefit from 4-5mm.Common sizes: 3mm – 5mm.
Choose based on comfort and anatomy—the disc must sit flush without digging in. Disc size must also balance with the attachment size st the front. For example, we always suggest a 4mm disc backing diameter for larger ends such as Koi or Willow gold ends
